Nature Art

Join Powder Valley's amazing painter and volunteer Pickett to paint lakes and their reflections. She will focus on techniques to show light. All are welcome, no experience is required. All materials are provided.

Join Missouri Department of Conservation as we present an afternoon of nature and art! Our urban habitats feature many great natural inspirations for artists on all levels. Learn about fireflies in St. Louis, then create a piece of inspiration to take home. Grab a friend or two, your older child/ren, or make it a date. No experience needed and we’ll provide all the materials necessary. We will be learning about fireflies and then creating a painting a summer firefly scene. Please register each person.

If you missed it the first time, here it is again! Please join us for a virtual program during lunch time to celebrate birds!

From heroic acts to being messengers, and symbols from good and bad, birds are important characters in legends, folklore, and mythology. Celebrate our feathered friends by discovering the beauty and glory of birds in Missouri. Learn how their histories, personalities, and their influence has impacted how they are perceived and seen by mankind. This program will highlight a few songbirds.

Insects

Join us for a night a creativity as we bring nature and art together! Learn the basics of collecting and pinning insects. This incudes tips on how to collect insect safely, tips on identifying and the walking though the pinning process. Each participant will get to pin a pre collected Brood XIII Cicada and design a shadow box for it to go inside.

No experience needed and we’ll provide all the materials necessary. Please register each person. Ages 18+

Hunter Education Skills Session

This skills session will satisfy part two of Missouri Hunter Education requirements. To obtain hunter education certification you must also attend part one (online, self-study, or a classroom session) and bring along your skills session qualifier certificate or a student manual with the review questions completed. Students 15 and under must also bring a copy of their birth certificate or other proof of age. The final exam will be administered at the end of the skills session.

Amphibians and Reptiles

Come meet one of the ambassador snakes who calls Powder Valley home. Learn all about that species and hear about its journey of coming to live at the Nature Center. After the snake encounter, spend time enjoying the rest of the exhibits! An MDC naturalist and ambassador snake will be located inside the Nature Center lobby.
