Pin Oak Slough

Points of Interest:

  • Visit a remnant wetland in the floodplain of Clearfork Creek.
  • Listen for the chorus of frogs and toads in the spring.

Natural Features Description:

This slough was formed from an old cut-off of Clearfork Creek. In wet winters and springs the slough holds water. Along the edges of the slough are a variety of bottomland forest species, notably pin oak, silver maple, swamp white oak and bur oak. The wettest areas support buttonbush. The ground flora consists of sedges and wetland grasses and forbs.

This natural area is within Knob Noster State Park. From Warrensburg travel east about 8 miles on Highway DD and follow the signs to the park visitor center (on the north side of DD). Inquire at the park office on access to the natural area. A map and compass are recommended to explore this area.
